CC Hangs on to Cage Leopards

Colorado College utilized stellar three-point shooting to build a 20-point lead and then hung on to record an 82-75 victory at the University of Laverne on Tuesday afternoon.

The Tigers connected on eight of 14 shots from behind the arc during the first half when CC built a 53-33 lead after 20 minutes.

Sophomore winger McKenzee Gertz finished 3-for-6 from long range and led Colorado College with 23 points.

Gertz now is tied with Jordy Stephenson (2008-12) for ninth place in school history with 71 career three-point buckets.

Jade Odom made four of eight long-range shots and finished with 19 points. The sophomore guard also dished out a game-high six assists.

Senior guard Casey Torbet, along with junior guards Jordan Meltzer and Nia Duplain, added 10 points apiece for the Tigers.

Torbet added five assists and went 4-for-4 from the charity stripe during the final 22 seconds to help CC seal the victory.

Torbet climbed into seventh place on the programs all-time assist list with 221.

Jazzlyn Johnson scored 10 of her game-high 26 points during the third quarter to help the Leopards cut their deficit in half with 10 minutes to play.

A Torbet layup gave Colorado College a 73-61 cushion with 8:09 to go, but Alexis Smith scored three points on consecutive possessions to pull ULV to within four points with 4:37 remaining.

CC extended its lead to 76-69 by hitting three of six free throws, only to see La Verne get back to back to within three points when Smith sank a pair of free throws with 65 seconds to go.

The Tigers iced the game by making six of eight free throws during the final 53 seconds.

Angie Smith scored 16 points for the Leopards, while Smith finished with 11.

Colorado College completed its season-opening three-game road trip to Southern California with a 2-1 record and will play host to St. Olaf College in its home opener on Friday afternoon on Day 1 of the 2018 Rocky Mountain Thanksgiving Classic.
