CMS Men's Basketball Tripped Up by Trinity 74-64

GEORGETOWN, Texas - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's basketball team led 39-33 at the half, but Trinity (Texas) was able to overtake the Stags in the second half and come away with a 74-64 win at Southwestern on Sunday.

The loss was the first of the young season for the Stags, who were led by Josh Angle with 17 points and Reid Jones with 13.

Angle started the second half with a jumper to make the score 41-33, and answered a Trinity basket with two foul shots, but the Tigers went on a 7-0 run to get it down to one point. Angle stopped the slide with a three-pointer, but the Tigers were able to take their first lead of the second half at 50-48 on a Jacob Harvey three-pointer.

Cahal Connolly tied it back up with a jumper and Jones hit a three-pointer to give CMS a 53-50 lead, but Trinity swung the lead back with a 6-0 run. Jones cut it back to one with a jumper, and Rhett Carter closed the gap to 64-62 with 2:20 to go when he scored off an Angle feed.

Trinity came up with two straight clutch baskets, though, to push the lead back up to 68-62 with 1:25 to play. Matt Meredith scored off of a Will King feed to cut the lead to four, but Trinity went 6-6 at the line in the final minute to seal it.

CMS will be back in action this Friday and Saturday when it co-hosts the David Wells Classic with Pomona-Pitzer.
