The Colorado College women's track and field team opened its 2017 outdoor season Saturday at the Willamette Opener Meet in Salem, Ore.
"Going into the meet, the women seemed to be fired up," head coach
Ted Castaneda said. "Then they went out an inspired each other and exceeded a lot of our expectations today."
Senior
Leah Wessler led five Tigers in the top seven of the 5,000-meter race to capture CC's only individual victory Saturday at the Charles Bowles Track.
Wessler, the reigning three-time SCAC Runner of the Year in cross country and the 2015 SCAC champion in the 5K, completed the course in a personal-best time of 17:59.96, just ahead of fellow senior
Katie Sandfort, who finished second with a time of 18:00.5. Sophomore Alyssa Warling finished fourth in 18:27.99, while sophomore
Leah Veldhuisen (18:52.85) and senior
Allie Crimmins (28:59.72) placed sixth and seventh, respectively.
Junior
Asmeda Spalding-Aguirre led a group of three Tigers that finished second in their respective events. Spalding-Aguirre finished second in the 400-meters with an impressive time of 59.77, while freshman
Annabel Driussi posted a second-place finish in the 800 in 2:32.32. Junior
Ayla Loper also captured second-place in the high jump leaping 4'8.6".
Freshman
Caroline Alba placed fourth in the shot put (31'6.5") and junior
Samantha Gilbert finished in a fifth-place tie in the 100-meters with a time of 12.99 seconds.
The other top 10 finish for the Tigers on Saturday came from sophomore
Amanda Martin in the javelin (10
th with a personal-best 92'0.50"). Another personal-best came from senior
Emiko Smukler, who shaved nearly 40 seconds off her previous best time in the 1,500-meter race, finishing with a time of 5:15.9.
The Tigers are idle until Saturday, March 25, when they host the 2017 Colorado College Invitational at Frank Flood Track.
