Fueled by double-doubles from
Casey Torbet and
McKenzee Gertz, the Colorado College women's basketball team picked up an important Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference victory by coming from behind to defeat Southwestern University on Friday night at Reid Arena.
Torbet recorded the first double-double of her career with 22 point and a career-high 10 assists. The senior guard became the third player in program history to reach the 300-assist plateau and finished the night with 306.
Gertz notched her eighth double-double of the season with a game-high 24 points and 10 rebounds.
With CC trailing 49-41 late in the third quarter, Gertz and freshman guard
Izzy Hensley hit three-pointers to pull the Tigers to within a point with 10 minutes to play.
Torbet hit a pull-up jumper to give Colorado College the lead and ignite a 19-7 surge that gave the Tigers an 11-point cushion with 4:55 remaining.
Cecily Woolfolk scored on a layup with 1:28 to play to cut Southwestern's deficit to 69-66, but baskets by Gertz and junior forward
Nia Duplain, and then four Torbet free throws iced the game.
Gertz scored seven points as CC raced to an early 13-1 lead. The Pirates closed to within three near the end of the first quarter before Torbet hit a jumper just before time expired.
Colorado College led 33-25 with 3:31 to play before halftime, only to see Southwestern close to within a point when Zhazze Brown hit a triple as time expired in the first half.
CC improved to 10-10 overall and 7-5 in the SCAC, percentage points behind the Pirates in the battle for fifth place in the conference standings.
The top six team qualify for the league's postseason tournament, which will be played Feb. 22-24 at Texas Lutheran University in Kerrville, Texas.
Woolfolk led Southwestern with 19 points and 11 rebounds.
Zhazze Brown added 13 point for the Pirates, who dropped to 7-12 overall and 6-4 in the conference.
Tori Carraway scored eight points and pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds.
Colorado College plays its final home game of the season at 5:30 p.m. Saturday against Texas Lutheran University.
