HOUSTON – The Celts of the University of St. Thomas fought hard and came up just short in a 1-0 setback Sunday against Houston–Victoria.
After a scoreless first half, UHV picked up the match-winning goal when Mohammed Ibrahim rebounded his own header shot that UST goalkeeper Pedro Medrano (SO/Houston, Texas) initially saved. The second effort went into the far side of the goal to give the Jaguars the 1-0 lead.
The Celts had several chances to level the score but were turned away each time. UST made a furious comeback attempt in the last eight minutes of the game after UHV's Oliver Nugent was shown a red card for his second booking of the match.
Medrano made his second start of the season in goal for the Celts; he had three saves in the match. Gian Marco Cordoba stopped both shots on goal he faced from the Celts.
The Celts return to action this weekend when they travel to Colorado for their next two matches. UST faces Johnson & Wales in Denver on Friday, with kickoff scheduled for 5 p.m. Central Daylight Time (4 p.m. locally).
