Crusaders Grab First Series Victory since 2017 After Holding Off Austin College on Sunday

SHERMAN, Texas - The University of Dallas baseball team secured its first series win since 2017 after holding off Austin College 14-9 on Sunday afternoon. Josh Abalos (Lewisville, Texas) and Nathan Patton (McKinney, Texas) both combined for six RBI on the day, as the team notched 11 total for the day. Dallas grabbed the early lead, but Austin pulled within one run in the sixth frame after a three-run homerun. UD used a five-run eighth to expand its lead and secure the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) victory.

Jordan Stickler (Grand Rapids, Mich.) began the game reaching base after being hit by a pitch. He then stole second and eventually made his way to third base. With one out, Patton drove in Stickler with a groundout to shortstop. Andrew Magness (San Antonio, Texas) then shut down Austin College in order.

In the second frame, Luke Boylson (Fairview, Texas) led the inning off with a single through the left side. Michael Jaquez (Irving, Texas) was later hit by a pitch. Joseph Griesbauer (Troy, Mo.) made a productive out by allowing both runners to move up a bag. Boylson would score on the next pitch with on the balk. Paul Scioli (Lubbock, Texas) walked. Joseph Vondrachek (North St. Paul, Minn.) gathered an RBI in his at bat with a groundout to the pitcher. Stickler followed that up with a single and an RBI to push the Dallas lead to 4-0. AC picked up its first run of the game in their half after Bennett Reagan drove in a run.

Abalos led off the third inning with a walk and a steal. Patton drove him in with a single down the left field line. Magness sat AC down 1-2-3 in the third inning. Jaquez walked, Griesbauer singled, and Scioli was hit by a pitch to begin the fourth. Vondrachek allowed Jaquez to come in to score with his sacrifice fly to center. Dallas later loaded up the bases once again in the inning. Abalos singled in another run for the Crusaders to put Dallas up 7-1. The 'Roos gained a few baserunners in their half, but nothing came of it.

After UD went down in order in the fifth, AC found some momentum at the plate. The 'Roos loaded up the bases with one out. Brett Taff drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to center field. Magness escaped the inning with no further damage. Dallas had two runners in scoring position in the top half of the sixth, but was unable to drive them in.

Josh Boring hit a lead-off homerun over the left field fence to put Austin College back on the board. After a walk, a single, and a pitching change Jake Webster smacked a homerun of his own to left field driving in three runs to pull AC within one run.

Abalos singled up the middle to open up the Dallas seventh. He then stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error by the catcher. He later scored on a wild pitch to grow the Dallas lead. UD eventually stranded two runners to end the frame. Dallas secured a marginal lead after putting up a five-spot on the board in the eighth inning. Dallas had five runs off of four hits and three errors in that frame to go up 13-6. The 'Roos did not let up in their half. AC scored three runs off of four hits to get within four runs. Abalos picked up another RBI, as UD would escape Sherman with the series victory.

Abalos and Patton both had three RBI to lead Dallas in that category. Jaquez and Vondrachek both drove in two RBI. Abalos was 3-4 at the plate with three runs scored. Jaquez had the lone extra base hit with his double. Stickler and Abalos both swiped three bases each in the game.

Magness pitched five innings, gave up four hits, and five runs, along with five strikeouts. He picked up his second career win and his first as a starter. Jamie Wallace (Crockett, Texas) came in relief for three innings of work. Wallace gave up eight hits and four runs, but struck out three batters. William Bresnahan (Windham, N.H.) threw the final inning only allowing one run.

Webster led the 'Roos with three RBI. Five AC players each had a two-hit day. The 'Roos swiped three bases on the day. AC used seven pitchers in the outing.

This was the Crusaders first series win against Austin College since 2016.
