CSB splits on final day in Texas

ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict volleyball team split a pair of matches against ranked teams on its final day in Texas.
 
After beating No. 15 Mary Hardin-Baylor 3-1, CSB fell 3-1 to No. 17 Trintiy – the host school – 3-1 to finish 3-1 on the weekend in San Antonio.
 
CSB started the day Saturday with a come-from-behind win against Mary-Hardin Baylor. After falling 25-9 in a tough first set, Saint Benedict bounced back to win the next three sets 25-15, 25-17 and 25-23.
 
Both Hunter Weiss and Madison Weiss had 15 kills to pace CSB – which finished with 51 total kills. First year Gabby Heying had 10 kills and three blocks, and Madison finished the match with seven blocks. Katie Koch had 41 assists, and junior Morgan Holthaus led the defense with 16 digs. Haley LaValle and Mary Wenisch each had 15 digs and Bridget McDonald chipped in with 12.
 
In the final set of the day, Trinity won the first two sets 25-22 and 25-18 before CSB picked up a 25-22 win, but Trinity won 25-21 to seal the victory. Heying recorded a career-high 16 kills and Hunter Weiss and Madison Weiss each finished with 12. Koch had 43 assists, LaValle had 20 digs and Koch finished with 15 digs.
 
The schedule doesn't get any easier for CSB as the team hits the road Wednesday to travel to Eau Claire, Wis., to take on the fourth-ranked team in the country in UW-Eau Claire.
