The College of Wooster softball team solidified its most successful start to a season in program history during the second half of its annual spring break trip, as the Scots won seven of their last eight games in Fort Myers, Fla., to push their overall record to 12-4, which bested the team's 10-6 start during the 2010 season.

Highlighting the second half of the team's southern swing were a pair of 10-0 run-rule wins against Wisconsin Lutheran College and University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, as well as a 1-0 victory over St. Olaf College which came on an RBI single in the eighth inning.

Jenn Horton, who was named North Coast Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week on March 19, continued where she left off during the first half of the trip, as she went 4-0 with a 0.96 earned run average and 22 strikeouts in her six appearances during week two. Her most impressive outing was against St. Olaf, where she allowed just two hits and struck out eight batters in an eight-inning shutout.

Also noteworthy, Horton went 8-for-22 (.364) at the plate, including a breakout game against Massachusetts Dartmouth, where she went 2-for-3 with a double, home run, and three RBI.

Fellow pitcher Gina Pirolozzi was also strong in the circle, as she posted a 3-1 record and a 2.13 earned run average. Against Massachusetts Dartmouth, Pirolozzi gave up only one hit and fanned seven in a nearly perfect victory.

Pacing the Scots offensively was Demi Hart, who hit 12-for-24 (.500) with four RBI during the second half of the trip, extending her current hitting streak to 11 games.

Lauren Swinehart went 6-for-21 (.286) and drove in five runs, including the game-winning single in the eighth inning over St. Olaf. She also had a heads up play against Wisconsin Lutheran College, where she singled with the bases loaded to drive in a pair of runs, and then took advantage of an error by an outfielder to come all the way around to score.

Other notable performances include Carly Schoenstein against Worcester State (3-for-3, 2 RBI, SB), Erica Villa against Massachusetts Dartmouth (2-for-3, RBI, 2 runs), and Paige Goldberg against Massachusetts Dartmouth (2-for-3, RBI, 3 runs, 2 SB).

The Scots also continued stealing bases at a high rate, as they snagged 11 over their last eight games, and now have 31 on the year.

Wooster will look keep up its positive momentum when it returns back to Ohio to visit Marietta College for a doubleheader March 28. The action is schedule to begin at 3:30 p.m.
