Tigers repeat as SCAC tournament champs

No. 13 Colorado College won its second consecutive Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference tournament title with a 3-1 (25-13, 24-26, 25-22, 25-20) victory over Trinity University on Saturday night in Jackson, Miss.
 
Senior setter Amy Schornack, an all- SCAC first-team selection, broke the her own single-season record with her 19th assist during the championship match. Schornack dished out 41 assists against Trinity and finished the match with 1,282 assists, 23 more than the mark she established last year.

Schornack was named the MVP of the championship, while junior outside hitter Laura Goldsmith and senior libero Hannah Varnell joined her on the all-tournament team.

Goldsmith, a second team all-conference selection, earned her third double-double of the weekend with 12 kills and a team-high 31 digs.
 
Senior ouitside hitter Sarah Schmoker had five kills on 12 attacks during the first set to help the Tigers cruise to a 25-13 win over Trinity.
 
TU came back in the second set to knot the match at one set apiece with a 26-24 victory over CC. The Tigers led most of the second set until Trinity tied the game at 24-24 with a block by Catharine Found and Maddy Hazelwood. TU earned the final two points off of two errors by CC.
 
The Tigers took an early four-point lead in the third set and never looked back as they beat Trinity 25-22. Schornack hit a blistering .625 hitting percentage with six kills on eight attempts with an error to lead CC in the third set.
 
The Tigers carried their momentum into the fourth set as they beat TU 25-20 to earn the tournament title. With the fourth set tied at 4-4, CC went on a 4-0 run that was sparked by a kill from sophomore Devin Wilkinson to retake the lead.       
 
Schmoker led the offense for CC with 13 kills, while junior Kate Squires added another eight kills. Goldsmith and Schmoker each served up a team-high three aces to aid the Tiger attack.
 
Freshman Logan Savidge had a career-high 19 digs to aid the backrow for the Tigers, while Varnell added 21 digs. Schornack and Schmoker each had double-figure digs with 18 and 14 digs, respecitvely to each obtain their second double-double of the weekend.
 
Colorado College improved to 31-6 this season and has posted three consecutive 30-win seasons for the first time in program history.
 
The Tigers earned the SCAC's automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament and will make the program's 14-consecutive postseason appearance. The brackets will be announced on Monday, Nov. 7.
