Late Run Propels Tigers Past Dominican

Box Score Sophomore forward Andrew Maddock returned to the lineup after a one-game absence to score a game-high 23 points as Colorado College used a late run to defeat Dominican University, 85-71, on Tuesday night at Reid Arena.

Maddock connected on eight of nine shots from the floor and seven of 10 free throws.

Sophomore forward John Hatch recorded a career-high 16 points and narrowly missed his first career double-double with a career-best nine rebounds.

Sophomore guard Eric Houska added 12 points a career-high eight assists, while freshman guard Reed Nakikihara reached double-figures for the first time with 10 points.

Despite playing from behind nearly the entire game, the Stars pulled to within five on a Josh Mayberry dunk with 6:36 to play.

CC, however, scored 19 of the next 24 points to extend its lead to 85-66 with 74 seconds remaining. Senior forward James Lonergan put an emphatic stamp on the victory with 1:45 to go when he drove the lane for a dunk to give the Tigers an 81-66 advantage.

Colorado College led 55-41 after freshman guard Jacob Miller canned a pair of free throws 7:15 into the second half, but Dominican fought back to within four points when freshman forward Isaac Moore hit a three-pointer with 8:16 to go.

CC was on the verge of breaking the game open midway through the first half after freshman guard Nakikihara dialed long distance to give the Tigers a 20-12 cushion. The Stars fought back to within three points when junior guard Josh Mayberry scored on a layup with 1:55 to go.

Moore led the Stars with 17 points. Sophomore forward Tim Robertson scored 14, and Mayberry added 13 before fouling out with 4:53 to play.

In the first game of the day, junior guard Jordan Cannon scored 26 points to lead Wartburg College to a 77-76 victory over Concordia University Texas.

Junior guard Rashad Coleman led the Tornados with 17 points, while freshman forward Jhealan Wesley added 13.

The Pikes Peak Holiday Classic wraps up with a pair of games on Wednesday. Dominican returns to action at 11 a.m. against Wartburg College, and then four-day event concludes at 1 p.m. when Colorado College plays host to the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater.
