Crusaders fall in Sunday's Doubleheader at Trinity
SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The University of Dallas softball team was swept in its Sunday doubleheader at Trinity University. The Crusaders gained their first win in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) play with a split on Saturday. Trinity was able to get back above .500 both overall and in the league.
The Tigers scored five times in the first contest and Allie Holbrook blanked the visitors to make it a 2-1 series lead.
Dallas answered a six-run bottom of the first with six of its own in the third inning to make it a 7-6 lead. The Tigers countered with two in the home half of the inning and added three more to win the high-scoring matchup despite UD collecting a season-high 17 hits.

The teams combined for 27 hits with both teams registering double-digits in that category. Only five runners touched home in the game for either side, with the Tigers notching the shutout.
Madison Coutts (Tampa, Fla.) and Liz Cordova (Oklahoma City, Okla.) singled in the first inning but would be stranded.
Trinity got on the board in the bottom of the frame with Danielle Ruiz hitting a knock to center for the fourth one at that point. A trio of singles loaded the bases, and a force out at home happened for out number two before the go-ahead run came in with Brianna Pena scoring.
Dallas had runners on base in every inning but were unable to bring a run in. This included loading the bases in the third and sixth innings. Coutts and Julie Duenas (Houston, Texas) had back-to-back hits with one out. Blyss Johnson (Wells, Texas) added another single two batters later, but the Tigers escaped still up a run.
An RBI-single to left in the next half inning by Rylie Goldwait scored Marisa Trevino to double the Tigers advantage. A three-run fifth pushed the margin to five, as singles by Stephanie Crumrine, Emily Vaclavik, and Carli Jones plated a run apiece.
Still, the Tigers had a runner in scoring position every time up and mustered 17 hits. The Crusaders followed that fifth with bases loaded and one out, but an infield fly and ground out ended the jam.
Coutts and Johnson led Dallas at the plate with 2-for-4 showings. Eight different starters recorded a hit for the Crusaders. Mel Savala (Bryan, Texas) had a stolen base as a pinch runner.
Karina Campo (Georgetown, Texas) went 4.1 innings in the start and was charged four runs on 13 hits. She walked and struck out one. Lindsay Devlin (Leander, Texas) hurled the last 1.2 innings and allowed a run on four hits with a walk.
Seven batters for the Tigers claimed multiple hit games that included three-hit days by Ruiz and Crumrine. One of her hits was a double, and Trevino drilled the other for the two extra-base hits in the game.
Holbrook worked around 10 hits, as she walked one and fanned one in her second win of the series in the complete game.

The Crusaders struck first with Stevenson hitting a single up the middle and stealing second to start the game. Duenas would drive her in on a hit through the right side.
Trinity answered in its first turn to bat with a six-spot being posted. Pena batted a home run to tie the game. Consecutive doubles by Trevino and Potter led to the second run. An infield hit loaded the bases, but then a throwing error on the same play allowed the third run to cross. The other half of runs that frame came via a hit by Ruiz and two-RBI single by Crumine. All Trinity's runs this inning occurred with two outs.
Dallas erupted for six runs in the third inning. Coutts drove in Stevenson on a single to center. The Crusaders would total six hits in the inning, highlighted by Katelyn Lazarek's (Seattle, Wash.) bases-clearing double to lead to another lead change with UD up 7-6. That was the lone extra-base hit for the guests. Bri Torres (Cypress, Texas), who was a perfect 4-for-4, had an RBI single. Mackenzie Tano (Wylie, Texas) walked with the bases loaded for the other RBI.
Pena gave the Tigers the lead for good in the bottom of the inning with a double to right center that scored Vaclavik and Gina Monaco. Trinity extended the lead with three more runs in the fourth.
The Crusaders had a pair of hits in each of the last three innings, but only got one run back on a Coutts single to score Stevenson in the sixth.
Stevenson matched a game-high three runs scored as she went 4-for-5 for her third performance this month with that many base knocks. Torres also tallied that amount for a career-best to go with a run scored and driven in. Rounding out the multi-hit games for UD was a trio that included: Coutts (2-4), Duenas (2-3), and Campo (2-4). Each of them scored a run, with six starters crossing the plate once. Eight batters for Dallas had at least one in the hit column.
Maggie Watts (Arcadia, La.) was unable to escape the first inning jam, as she allowed eight hits – seven with two outs - on six runs. She did have one strikeout. Haley Henson (Chandler, Texas) allowed four runs (three earned) on six hits and two walks in 2.2 innings in the loss.
Devlin threw the last 2.2 innings and finished the series with 8.2 relief innings of just two runs allowed in three games.
Trinity tagged 16 hits with Pena leading the day with a 3-for-4 and three runs-batted-in to go with her homer and double mentioned earlier. Trevino had a pair of doubles for both her hits, and Potter added the other two-bagger, as she went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and RBI. Monaco was the other player in the game to cross home three times.
Cat Patterson received a no decision in the start as she went 2.1 innings. Alyssa Jolliffe threw the last 4.2 innings and was awarded her first win on the year. The duo allowed four runs apiece and had a strikeout. Jolliffe worked around 10 hits and two walks as well.

Dallas returns home for the final series this season on April 6-7 versus Austin College. Both days feature doubleheaders that will begin at 12 p.m. On Saturday, the Crusaders will have "Senior Day."
