Tigers extend winning streak with sweep

No. 13 Colorado College extended its winning streak to eight by sweeping both of its matches on the first day of the 2011 Molten Spike It Up Classic on Friday at Reid Gymnasium.

CC won its first match of the day against Chapman University, 3-0.

The Tigers hit a season-best .448 attack percentage and had only three attack errors the entire game. With 18 team blocks, CC was a strong presence at the net, which forced the Panthers to hit a meager .061 attack percentage with 23 errors.

In the first set, the Tigers were tied 6-6, but with strong serving by senior Sarah Schmoker CC went on a 10-0 run to take the lead. The Tigers never looked back after that and went on to win the set, 25-13.

Colorado College carried that momentum into the second set as it hit a .500 attack percentage with only one error. The Tigers won the second set, 25-16.

CC won the final set, 25-16 with a .455 hitting percentage. The Tigers also had four of their seven service aces in the third set alone.

The Tigers had four players hit .500 or better during the game. Senior Haley Hamilton led the team with a season-high .692 attack percentage, junior Laura Goldsmith had a career-high .571 hitting percentage, Schmoker had a .524 attack percentage and senior Meredith Ballard had a .500 hitting percentage.

Schmoker led the attack for the Tigers with 11 kills and added 10 digs on defense for her third double-double of the season. Hamilton and Ballard each added nine kills, while Goldsmith added eight.

Senior Amy Schornack ran the offense with a team-high 36 assists and 14 digs for her 10th double-double of the season.

Senior Hannah Varnell had a team-high 14 digs to lead the Tigers in the back row. Freshman Randi Braak and Ballard led the team at the net with a team-best six blocks each.

Colorado College won its second game of the day in a 3-0 sweep over York College (Pa.). The Tigers beat the Spartans, 25-14, 25-19, 25-19.

Schmoker and Ballard led the offense for CC with 11 kills each, while Hamilton and Braak each added five kills apiece.

Varnell led the Tiger defense with 16 digs. Goldsmith added 14 digs, while Schornack and Schmoker each adding nine digs each. Ballard led CC at the net with a team-high three blocks

Schornack led the team with 35 assists to run the offense for the Tigers. She also had three of the team's six service aces against the Spartans.

The Tigers are now 22-5 on the season. Chapman fell to 18-8, while York dropped to 10-12 this season.

CC finishes the weekend against UC Santa Cruz at 12 p.m. and Webster University at 6 p.m. on Sunday in Reid Gymnasium.
