Malone, Markin Lift CC Over Southwestern

Box Score Sophomore midfielder Robert Malone struck for his second goal of the season in the 85th minute to give the Colorado College men's soccer team its second come-from-behind victory of the weekend, defeating Southwestern University 2-1 Sunday in Georgetown, Texas.

Malone took a touch from junior forward Sam Markin and his shot ricocheted off a Pirate defender and past junior goalkeeper Ryan Benner. It proved to be his second game winner of the year and the fifth of his career.

The 20th-ranked Tigers improved to 12-2-1 overall and 9-2-0 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference. CC now has a nine-point lead over Southwestern in the battle for second place and a bye in the first round of the next month's conference tournament.

"We always get Southwestern's best shot when we play down there," head coach Scott Palguta said. "The game was very chippy and emotional. They were very aggressive and made it difficult for our guys to string passes together. The boys dug deep and found a way to win."

Senior midfielder Soren Frykholm leveled the score from the penalty spot in the 76th minute with his first goal of the year after Markin was taken down in the box.
In addition to drawing the card, Markin now has factored in three of CC's last four game winners, scoring two and setting up the other.

"Sam Markin played a very strong game and really carried the team offensively," Palguta said. "He had a terrific weekend."

Southwestern broke through in the 34th minute when junior midfielder Tanner Irons found the net with a diving header off of a corner kick from junior midfielder Mason Tomasek.

The Pirates had the run of play during the first half when Colorado College did not put any of its five shots on frame.

CC's first shot on target was a header by junior midfielder Joel Frykholm in the 57th minute.

Junior goalkeeper Theo Hooker stopped a pair of shots while improving to 10-2-1 in goal.

Benner made a pair of saves for Southwestern, which now is 7-8-0 overall and 6-5-0 in the conference.

The Pirates finished with an 11-10 edge in total shots and each team produced five corner kicks.

"No question about it, we will need to play better over the next two weeks," Palguta said.

The Tigers continue their five-game road swing next week when they visit Centenary College and Austin College on Friday and Sunday, respectively.
