Tigers Top PLU On Mackenzie’s Golden Goal

Box Score Colorado College remains unbeaten thanks to the offensive exploits of Caden MacKenzie and Tim Huettel.

MacKenzie struck for the first 'Golden Goal' of his career 2:55 into the second overtime, heading a cross from Huettel past Pacific Lutheran University goalkeeper Cole Weaver.

CC improved to 3-0-1 and now is unbeaten after four games for the first time since the 1995 squad started the season with five consecutive victories.

Netting game-winning goals is nothing new for MacKenzie, who struck for the only one the Tigers needed in Friday's 2-0 win over the University of Dallas.

The senior midfielder now has scored four game winners and set up four more, including Ben Green's 'Golden Goal' in the 1-0 victory over Concordia Moorhead in the 2016 season opener.

"Caden has always been a clutch player for our program and much of our potential for success is dependent on his ability to bang in goals," head coach Scott Palguta said.

The Tigers broke through in the 17th minute when Huettel jumped on the rebound of a Robert Malone shot and rifled the ball under PLU starting goalkeeper Tanner Premo.

In his first action of the season, Huettel was involved in three of his team's four goals, scoring two and setting up another.

"I'm pleased for Tim Huettel, who missed our entire spring season with an injury," Palguta said. "Tim's production continues to be excellent and he, along with Hayden Cogswell and Ben Green, gave us a real spark in the second overtime."

With the clock winding down, it appeared that goal would hold up. But the Lutes accomplished something no other opponent had done so far this season. They were able to get a ball past the Colorado College defense and junior goalkeeper Theo Hooker.

A direct kick from 30 yards out settled just inside the box, and when the Tigers were unable to clear it out of harm's way, Jaisen Zurfluh was there to drill it into the CC net in the 77th minute.

The Colorado College defense saw its goalless streak come to an end after 381:22, but kept PLU away from its net the remainder of the contest.

The Tigers, who went to overtime for the third time in four games this season, finished with an 18-9 advantage in total shots and a 7-5 edge in corner kicks.

Hooker finished with a pair of saves for CC.

Premo stopped two shots during the first half, while Weaver and Jack Rose each stopped one shot.

"Our guys sure like to do things the hard way, but once again I give them an awful lot of credit because they found a way to dig in and win the game," Palguta said.

Colorado College travels to Texas next week for Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference games at Trinity University and Schreiner University on Friday and Sunday, respectively.
