Volleyball Suffers First Loss of the Season

Volleyball Suffers First Loss of the Season

In a match between the two undefeated teams from the first day of the Southwestern University Volleyball Fall Invitational, Carthage defeated the Southwestern University Pirates in three sets (25-18; 25-19; 25-22).

Lauren Crabtree led the Pirates with nine kills on 23 attacks and four errors for a .217 hitting percentage. She also finished with nine digs, an ace and a block for a team-high 9.5 points. Carthage had two players with double-digit kills, led by Megan Behrendt's 17 on a blistering .412 hitting percentage. Teammate Shannon Kebisek had a double-double with 10 points and 12 digs.

  • Behrendt did most of her damage for Carthage in the first set, scoring nine kills on a .692 hitting percentage.
  • The Carthage defense appeared to overwhelm the young Pirates early, limiting Southwestern to a .140 hitting percentage in the first set with five errors.

Southwestern's hitters and middle blockers appeared tentative against Carthage's 6-foot-4 and 6-foot-1 front row players, attempting to place the ball over or around the defenders rather than attack aggressively.
  • Sophomore middle blocker Ashley Whitlock adjusted in the second set, attacking the block with force and recording four kills on a .300 hitting percentage after not scoring in the first set. Whitlock finished with seven kills and two assisted blocks.

  • Carthage managed to neutralize the Pirates' serve, which was a potent weapon for Southwestern in its first two games, limiting them to just one ace.
  • Three different Pirates finished with at least 10 digs, led by Ali Grona's 15. Emma White had 12 to go with eight kills, showing flashes attacking the larger Carthage front row. Setter Katelyn Whitehead had 10 digs and a team-high 28 assists.

The Pirates will close out their Fall Invitational later today with a match against Whitworth at 5:15 p.m. Next week, Southwestern will travel to Dallas for matches against Pacific Lutheran and Pomona-Pitzer ono Friday, Sep. 6 at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.; followed by matches against Aurora and Texas-Dallas on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. and 3 p.m.
