Tigers Edge No. 5 CNU for First Win Over a Top-5 Opponent

Junior attackman Elliot Nelson struck for a man-up goal with 1:35 remaining in overtime to give the Colorado College men's lacrosse team a dramatic 12-11 victory over No. 5 Christopher Newport University on Sunday afternoon.

"Elliott had the poise to take a great feed from Jack (Haims), improve his angle by climbing upfield and bouncing it in the top left corner," head coach Sean Woods said. "One of the prettiest game winners I've ever seen. "

It marked the first time in program history that CC defeated a team ranked in the top five of the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association's (USILA) Division III Poll.

"This is a milestone victory for our entire Tiger Lacrosse family," Woods said. "I'm so proud of our team for believing in, and executing the game plan. This group has completely bought in and I'm just happy to be a part of it."

The Tigers led 11-9 after Dylan Wells scored his second with 6:52 remaining in the fourth quarter, but CNU rallied with markers from Brady Altobello and Will Stockhausen to force the extra period.

The Captains played from in front for most of the first 30 minutes and led 7-4 after Drew Miller scored with 2:47 to play before halftime. However, Makay Hansen's second goal with 1:55 on the clock sparked a four-goal run that carried into the second half and ended with his third tally to give CC its first lead at 8-7.

After Altobello's first goal tied the score, markers from Luca Lietti and Jansen gave the Tigers their first two-goal cushion 39 seconds into the fourth quarter. Dylan Rice got one back for CNU midway through the frame, but Wells answered extend the lead to 11-9.

Hansen led the Tigers with four goals, while Jack Haims produced a game-high five points with three goals and a pair of assists.

In addition to his game-winning goal, Nelson dished out a game-high three assists.

Isaac Atencio led the Colorado College defense with two caused turnovers and two ground balls, while Will Burdette picked up four ground balls.

Colorado College finished the game with a 46-38 advantage in total shots, while CNU had a 34-24 edge in ground balls. The Captains also won 14 of 24 faceoffs.

The Tigers scored three man-up goals on 10 opportunities, while Christopher Newport was 0-for-3.
