Nina Mitrofanova Wraps Up ITA Cup Weekend

Nina Mitrofanova Wraps Up ITA Cup Weekend

ROME, Ga. -- Southwestern University Pirates women's tennis first year Nina Mitrofanova wrapped up her time at the ITA Cup with a loss to Gustavus sophomore Ginger Valentine in three sets (3-6, 6-2, 4-6).

"Nina had the same struggles today as she did yesterday," Head Coach Billy Porter said. "She played a much better second set today, again showing flashes but couldn't quite do enough of what worked there in the final set."

Mitrofanova went down 5-1 quickly in the third set but battled back to pull within one at 5-4 but couldn't carry the momentum to victory.

"Going 0-3 is obviously tough but gives Nina a great taste of the next level," Porter said. "She lost to three players with similar styles, giving her plenty to work on in the offseason."

Mitrofanova ends the fall season as women's tennis fifth All-American in three years, having won the ITA Regional West Championship. The Pirates will officially begin team play on Feb. 1 in Houston against new SCAC opponent, St. Thomas.
