Gents Fall 3-1 At Home To Texas Lutheran

Shreveport - The Centenary men's soccer team dropped a 3-1 decision to the Texas Lutheran Bulldogs on Sunday afternoon in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference match at Mayo Field.

The Gents (3-10-1, 0-5 SCAC) lost their ninth-consecutive match while the Bulldogs improved to 6-5-1 overall and 2-3 in league play. Centenary fell 1-0 at home on Friday to Southwestern.

Centenary started quickly as the Maroon and White scored first in Sunday's match as junior D David Barbera (Gonzales, La.) stuffed a header into the net following a corner kick from senior MF Cole Schultz (Denham Spring, La.) just over a minute into the match. TLU's Nestor Ayala evened the match in the 21st minute with a goal of his own, following a corner kick as Jared Esparaza was credited with the assist.

The first ended in the 1-1 tie and then the Bulldogs' Luis Green scored a pair of second-half goals for the 3-1 final margin. Senior GK Sami Borchalli (Lafayette, La.) played the entire match for the Gents and recorded eight saves, just one shy of his season-high of nine that he tallied at Trinity on Oct. 1. TLU GK Noel Pena played all 90 minutes, allowing the one goal and did not make a save.

The aggressive Bulldogs wound up with a decisive advantage in shots (21-3) and took five corner kicks to just the one for Centenary, which the Gents cashed in on. The teams combined for 18 fouls, 12 by the Bulldogs, and a pair of cards were issued. Centenary senior D Diego Hernandez (Carrollton, Texas) was issued a red card and an ejection in the 21st minute which left the Gents a man down the remainder of the match.

Centenary will face Colorado College on Friday, Oct. 22 for the Gents' final home match of the regular season on Senior Night at 7 p.m.
