Box Score John Hatch posted his third double-double of the season with 29 points and 10 rebounds to lead Colorado College to a 72-67 victory over Centenary College on Friday night at Reid Arena.
The Tigers improved to 8-13 overall and 7-3 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference. CC now is tied with Texas Lutheran University in second place, just a half-game behind first-place Schreiner University.
Junior guard
Eric Houska, who finished with 21 points and four assists, sealed the victory when he intercepted the inbounds pass with 5.2 seconds remaining and scored on a layup with two seconds to go.
Centenary took its final lead of the game, 55-53, when junior guard Dyllon Weaver canned a pair of free throws with 6:05 remaining.
Houska put Colorado College ahead when he drained a three-pointer with 5:30 to go, and then a three-pointer from Hatch gave the Tigers a 64-59 lead with 3:10 remaining.
CC held a 68-63 lead with 1:01 on the clock, but the Gents fought back to within a point when junior guard Travion Kirkendoll scored on a put-back with 19 seconds to play.
On its next possession, Colorado College broke the press and regained a three-point edge when Hatch slammed home a lob pass from freshman forward
CooXooEii Black with nine ticks remaining.
Centenary took its largest lead of the contest, 21-13, when Cedric Harris sank three free throws with 11:05 remaining in the first half.
The Tigers used a 16-7 run to go ahead 29-28, and after Mitchell Tarantolo knocked down a jumper with 1:54 to go, CC hit three of four free throws to take a 32-20 lead after 20 minutes.
The Gents led 41-37 with a little less than 13 minutes to play, but Hatch converted a three-point play and hit a three-pointer on back-to-back possessions to put Colorado College back in front.
Senior forward James Sapp led Centenary with 20 points and 11 rebounds. Kirkendoll also posted a double-double with 10 points and 11 boards.
The Gents slipped to 9-12 overall and 3-7 in the SCAC.
Colorado College plays host to Austin College at 1 p.m. Sunday.
