IRVING, Texas – The Celts of the University of St. Thomas kept themselves in the hunt for the regular season Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference championship Sunday with a 3-0 win at the University of Dallas.
Carlos Marquez (SR/El Paso, Texas) scored his fifth goal of the season in the 41st minute to give the Celts an early lead. Maxwell Lockhart (JR/Toronto, Canada) (63rd minute) and Jael Puga (FR/Houston, Texas) (84th minute) added insurance goals in the second half.
UST goalkeeper Pedro Medrano (SO/San Salvador, El Salvador) made four saves in goal to earn his fourth shutout of the season. He improved his overall record to 7-4 with the victory.
Sunday's win avenged a non-conference loss to UDallas earlier in the season. The victory was also the fifth consecutive triumph for the Celts, with the last four coming on the road.
The Celts (9-5) upped their record in SCAC play to 5-1. Their .833 winning percentage in conference play ranks second behind Colorado College (12-5, 7-1 SCAC), and ahead of Texas Lutheran and Trinity, which have identical 5-2 conference records.
Friday's contest in Sherman between the Celts and Austin College was rained out. No makeup contest has been announced yet.
The Celts return to action Friday, Nov. 1, when they host Southwestern University (Texas) at AVEVA Stadium. UST's soccer teams are celebrating Senior Night, and are encouraging the UST community to come out and support the Celts.
