CC rallies to edge Otterbein

Box Score Junior midfielder Dylan Davie struck for a season-high three goals, including the game winner with 12:23 remaining in the fourth quarter, as Colorado College rallied to defeat Otterbein University, 8-7, at CC's Washburn Field.

The Tigers improved to 5-4 and picked up a critical victory against one of the teams they are competing against for a 'Pool B' selection to the NCAA Tournament.

"This was a playoff game with a playoff atmosphere," head coach Sean Woods said about the postseason implications. "I'm proud of our guys and how they responded."

With Colorado College trailing 3-0 late in the first quarter, Davie set up a tally by Jack Kreitler with just 11 seconds remaining. Younger brother  Austin Davie scored 59 seconds into the second quarter to cut the deficit to one, but Mike O'Neal's man-up goal 1:31 later gave the Cardinals a 4-2 lead.

Gray Ritger ignited what proved to be a decisive 6-1 run when he scored with 2:05 remaining before halftime.

Dylan Davie tied the contest 2:18 into the third quarter and gave CC its first lead with 4:11 to play in the frame. Long-pole defender Trevor Kujawski knotted the score at 5-5 with 3:49 left in the third quarter, but Henri Halle got that one back when he found the cage with a shot from the right wing.

The Tigers extended their lead to 8-5 on goals by Ritger and Dylan Davie early in the fourth quarter. Ritger picked up a loose ball along the left sideline, ran off a high screen and put a bouncing shot past James Gundling 1:08 into the quarter.

Dylan Davie scored what proved to be his second game-winning tally of the season 54 seconds later after when he made a run toward the right post and sent a low shot just inside the left post.

"Dylan has become a real leader," Woods said. "He's tough, he's gritty and he makes smart decisions."

Pat Teynor, who already had set up a pair of Otterbein tallies in the first half, scored with 12:02 remaining in the game, and Robbie Guiliano struck for a man-up goal, his third of the game, with 9:37 remaining.

Neither goalie allowed a goal during the final nine minutes, and Colorado College took advantage of a pair of penalties on the Cardinals to run out the clock.

The Tigers finished with a 50-29 advantage in total shots, with a 27-16 edge on target. CC grabbed 31 ground balls, compared to 24 for Otterbein.

The Cardinals won 12 of 19 faceoffs, but committed 20 turnovers.

CC goaltender Chase Murphy steered away nine shots. P.J. Higgins forced a pair of turnovers and grabbed five ground balls to pace the Colorado College defense.

Freshman goalie James Gundling stopped 19 shots for Otterbein.

"He's a stopper," Woods said of Gundling. "We made him look good at times with our placement, but he really kept his team in the game. Otterbein is a tough, blur-collar team – a lot like us."

The Tigers play host to Southwestern University on Sunday in a non-conference game.
