Junior middle hitter
Georgia Mullins blasted a match-high 12 kills to lead the No. 1-ranked Colorado College volleyball team to a 25-21, 25-10, 25-17 victory over Texas Lutheran University on Friday afternoon at Reid Arena.
Mullins, who hit .478 with just one error on 23 swings, finished with a hitting percentage above .350 for the seventh match in a row and reached double-digit kills for the fourth time in the last five matches.
First-year outside hitter
Isabella Lipacis finished with nine kills and 11 digs, while senior right-side hitter
Allie Freeburg added seven kills. Senior middle hitter
Emma Hewlin put down five kills and had a hand in five blocked shots.
"
Georgia Mullins once again was a hitting machine with 12 Kills and only one error, and
Emma Hewlin had a great game blocking in the middle," head coach
Rick Swan said.
After falling behind by four points early in the first set, the Bulldogs stayed even with CC and led 21-20 after Madison Weisinger and Kacie Hall combined for a blocked shot. The lead was short-lived because Hewlin and Lipacis blocked a Weisinger shot on the next point and then the Tigers scored on kills by Lipacis and Mullins.
After a Texas Lutheran timeout, Colorado College put the set away on a TLU attack error and an ace by sophomore libero
Peyton Hummel.
The Tigers jumped out to an 11-5 lead in the second set and stayed in control the entire time thanks in part to 12 hitting errors by the Bulldogs.
Making sure CC did not allow Texas Lutheran to get back in the match, Mullins recorded six kills on an error-free nine attempts. She had the first two kills to snap a 6-6 ties, then closed out the match with four in a row after the Bulldogs had trimmed an 18-10 deficit to 21-17.
"It wasn't our best effort tonight but we put a good run together to close out set one," Swan said. "We were able to carry that over to set two where we controlled the flow.
"I thought TLU blocked extremely well and caused us to make some unfamiliar unforced errors. We made some adjustments and hit extremely well to close our set three."
The Tigers, who entered the match ranked second in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference with a .083 opponent hitting percentage, held TLU to a -.064 team percentage.
