Late Innings Lead to Pirate Loss on Sunday

GEORGETOWN, Texas - Southwestern dropped the finale of this weekend's series with the Trinity Tigers by a score of 10-5 this afternoon at Rockwell Field.

The Tigers used a five run seventh inning to erase an early Pirate lead and earn a split of the two game series. Pirates' starter Chris Churchwell came out strong allowing only one run over the first six innings. However, in the seventh the Trinity bats woke up and several defensive miscues by the Pirates led to five runs, only one of which was earned. The Tigers then followed with two runs in both the eighth and ninth innings.

Southwestern tried to rally, scoring three in the ninth off of reliever Matthew Tindall but ran out of outs before they could make up the deficit.

The offensive highlight of the day for the Pirates was centerfielder Cray Betts' (pictured) towering second inning homerun that easily carried the large scoreboard in left field. Betts was 2-5 on the day with two RBI and a run scored. First baseman Brett Martin also had two hits, an RBI, and two runs scored.

Today's game was a "Pink Out" to raise funds and awareness for breast cancer.

The loss dropped the Pirates to 5-8 on the season and 3-4 in SCAC play. They will be in action again on Wednesday for a home doubleheader with Robert Morris starting at 3:00 PM.
