Kenner, Mochel Lead Tigers Past Chapman

Freshman midfielder Isaac Kenner struck for his first collegiate goal and junior goalkeeper Keller Mochel stopped all four shots he faced as the Colorado College men's soccer team posted a 2-0 victory over Chapman University on Sunday afternoon at Stewart Field.

Kenner put the Tigers on the board late in the 51st minute when he punched a cross from sophomore midfielder Matthew Simons under Chapman goalkeeper Evan Owens, and the ball rolled into the left side of the net. It also was the first career point for Simons, who started the play with a run up the left sideline.

One goal proved to be all CC needed thanks to a superb performance by its defense.

Even though the Panthers finished with a 15-11 advantage in total shots, only four of those efforts were on target.

Chapman nearly leveled the score in the 68th minute, but Mochel made a diving punch on a direct kick by Javier Bernaldo from 30 yards away near the right sideline that was destined for the left side of the net.

Nearly two minutes later, the rebound of a blocked shot went to Justo Garcia in the center of the box, but the junior midfielder rang his follow-up shot off the crossbar and the Tigers cleared the ball out of harm's way.

Mochel finished with four saves while recording his first clean sheet of the season and the fourth of his career.

Colorado College added an insurance goal in the 77th minute when senior Robert Malone's direct kick from the left sideline went through traffic in the crease and into the far side of the net.

As the ball approached Owens, sophomore midfielder Skyler Stark-Ragsdale crossed in front of the Chapman keeper and caused enough of a distraction to allow Malone's shot to go in.

Owens made a pair of saves during the second half. Chandler Siemonsma started the game and stopped four shots during the opening 45 minutes.

The Tigers, who leveled their record at 1-1-0, kick off their Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference schedule next week with games at Austin College on Friday, Sept. 7, and the University of Dallas two days later.
