FLUKE GOAL LEADS TO PIRATE LOSS

FLUKE GOAL LEADS TO PIRATE LOSS

GEORGETOWN, Texas - A Hardin Simmons pass deflected by a Pirate defender was the lone goal needed to hand Southwestern their third loss of the season as they fell 1-0 on Saturday afternoon. With the loss SU falls to 2-3 on the season.

The Pirate defense was tested early in the game and HSU had their best looks midway through the first period, but first-year keeper Daniel Poole made two great diving saves to keep the game scoreless. The Cowboys took nine shots to Southwestern's three in the first half.

A keeper change at the start of the second half brought in junior Nick Pierce and he was tested early on with a shot from the middle that he punched out and the rebound came right back at him but was blocked by the Pirate defense, ending the threat.

The lone goal came in the 52nd minute on a break away by Isaiah Hicks. Hicks brought the ball down the middle of the field and moved to the outside and on the pass to his teammate the ball deflected off of Southwestern's defender and past Pierce.

SU pressed hard in the remainder of the game and had many great runs at the goal, but their setup passes seemed to be just out of reach.

HSU took 17 shots to Southwestern's 11 and received four more corner kicks (7-3).

Southwestern has a long, well-deserved break before hitting the road to open up conference action in their next game. They face Rhodes College on September 24th beginning at 4:00 pm.
