GEORGETOWN, Texas – Colby Schmidt drove in three runs, including the final two on a walk-off home run, and the Southwestern baseball team defeated Huntingdon, 3-1, in the series opener Friday night at Rockwell Field.

Schmidt deposited the second pitch of his ninth-inning at-bat over the wall in left field to make the Pirates (3-1) a winner. The sophomore from Liberty Hill was 2 for 4 on the night.

Southwestern trailed 1-0 in the seventh inning before Schmidt tied the game on a run-scoring single.

Hayden Holley (1-0) picked up the win in relief, tossing 2.2 scoreless innings. Jeremy Rice received a no-decision, but logged a quality start. The right-hander worked 6.1 innings and allowed an unearned run while striking out five.

The two teams will conclude the set Saturday with a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
