Errors Cost Volleyball in Loss to TLU

SEGUIN, Texas — The Southwestern University Pirates volleyball team was defeated on the road, losing to the Texas Lutheran University (TLU) Bulldogs in four sets (25-20, 17-25, 21-25, 25-27). 

The Pirates struggled to work around the Bulldogs' block, which was led by Bryten Mitchan and Kelsi Menn, who combined to assist on 15 blocks while limiting Southwestern to a .076 hitting percentage. 

Southwestern opened the first set with wild swings, committing four consecutive attack errors while falling behind 8-2. The Pirates battled back, scoring five consecutive points to pull back within one at 10-9 and eventually took the set 25-20, holding TLU to a -0.032 hitting percentage. 

The Pirates struggled in the second set, committing more attack errors (seven) than kills, finishing with a -0.029 hitting percentage. 

Both teams struggled to find holes in the defense in the third set, hitting 0.111 each. But after Southwestern pulled ahead 19-17 on a Landri Brown kill, TLU reeled off an  8-2 run to take the set, taking advantage of three errors over that time. 

Southwestern had set point in the fourth at 24-21 but committed three attack errors and a service error to surrender the lead and give up the set in extra points. 

Emma White led the team in total points (14.5) with 11 kills, five block assists, and one ace with 13 digs but committed nine attack errors. Landri Brown was the Pirates' most efficient option, producing 10 kills on a .308 clip. Lauren Crabtree had a match-high 29 assists and Ali Grona led the Pirates with 26 digs. 

No TLU players finished with double-digit kills. Mean had eight kills on a .316 hitting percentage with seven block assists to lead the Bulldogs with 11.5 points. 

With a third consecutive loss, the Pirates drop to 13-9 on the season and 6-4 in conference play. The Pirates won't return to action against until Friday, Oct. 18 with matches against Centenary and Dallas in Dallas, Texas.
