GEORGETOWN, Texas - Southwestern women's tennis fell 6-3 to the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor on Thursday afternoon to move to 5-4 on the season.
The match started out just as anticipated with doubles matches going back and forth the entire way. UMHB took #1 and #3 doubles as Bigler/Gaines fell 9-7 and Karmptiz/Guevara dropped their match 8-5. DeLeon/Blake (pictured) kept it from becoming a sweep with an 8-6 win in #2 doubles.
As singles play got underway it was apparent that it was going to be a hotly contested match. Victoria DeLeon was edged out in #1 singles by Megan Aarhus, falling 6-7, 6-0, 10-4 while Elyse Bigler dropped her #2 singles match 6-4, 7-5 to Mallory Aarhus. Jessica Gaines and Aimee Blake attempted to right the ship and keep SU in the running for the win with #3 and #4 singles wins. Gaines won in a barn-burner over Chaley Shiffler 7-6 (7-5), 6-7, 10-4 while Blake won in a tie-breaker after being down one set to defeat Ashlee Bilbo 2-6, 6-2, 10-6.
Kristina Krampitz and Ale Guevara weren't able to pull out the wins in #5 and #6 singles, however, as Krampitz fell to Carrie Ramos 6-0, 6-3 and Guevara dropped her match against Angelic Juaneza 6-0, 6-0.
Southwestern heads to San Antonio for a flurry of matches beginning with Austin College on Friday at 3 p.m. to kick off the SCAC Round Robin.
