Trinity slips past CC in overtime

Box Score Colorado College overcame a 12-point deficit early in the second half to send the game to overtime, but the Tigers couldn't get one of their final two shots to drop and came out on the wrong end of a 69-67 decision at Trinity University on Sunday afternoon.

Senior forward Jeremiah Waters sank three clutch free throws with four seconds remaining in regulation to force the extra session and the CC led 65-64 after freshman forward Chris Lesnansky knocked down a short jumper with 2:39 to play.

The Texas Tigers regained the lead when Heath Hopson completed a three-point play just 15 seconds later and he scored again with 1:45 to go. A layup by sophomore guard Chris Mayo Smith trimmed Colorado College's deficit to two points with 1:28 remaining, and his rebound set up sophomore guard Ryan Milne's desperation three-point attempt with six seconds left.

Lesnansky paced the CC with a season-high 23 points, while Milne finished with 18.

Junior forward Ian Rewoldt recorded his fourth double-double of the season with 11 points and 11 rebounds before fouling out 21 second into overtime with his second foul in a span of three seconds.

Zach Lambert led TU with 19 points, while Hopson finished with 17.

A layup by John Lavanway gave Trinity a 38-26 lead just 40 seconds into the second half, but CC used a 14-4 run during the ensuing 8:19 to pull to within 42-40 on a bucket by Milne.

TU extended its advantage to seven points when Lambert scored with 7:02 on the clock, only to see Colorado College answer with five straight points and cuts its deficit to 58-56 with 1:50 to play.

Ryan Beall got the second of two free throws to fall with just 14 seconds to play, setting up Waters' clutch free throws after he was fouled by Lambert 10 seconds later.

Colorado College slipped to 10-12 overall and 7-8 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference. Trinity improved to 15-8 overall and 10-4 in conference play.

CC plays host to Johnson and Wales University on Wednesday night at Reid Gymnasium in a game that was originally scheduled for next Sunday.
