GEORGETOWN, Texas – Southwestern staved off Schreiner's streaks in the second half to win 55-44 over the Mountaineers on Sunday afternoon. The win improves the Pirates to 7-1 on the season while Schreiner falls to 1-6.
Both teams got out to a slow start, scoring just one point through the opening 3:30 of the game. After a messy next 10 minutes Southwestern put together a 12-5 run in the final seven minutes of the half to mount a 10 point lead heading into halftime, 27-17. The Pirates held Schreiner without a field goal for the final five minutes of the half.
The Mountaineers came out strong at the start of the second half, cutting the lead to five, 27-22 after a pair of free throws by Garrett. Southwestern got their first bucket of the half with 16:13 to play when Chelsea Leeder made a lay-up, assisted by Jennifer Tindle. From that point SU rattled off nine more points to build a 13 point lead, 35-22 with 13:33 to play.
Schreiner would not go away, however, and came within four points, 36-32 with 8:34 left on the clock after a three by Corona. Senior Anna Fareed (pictured) answered with a three of her own on the ensuing possession and pushed the lead back to seven.
The Pirates kept the Mountaineers at a safe distance for the remainder of the contest, closing out the win going 6-7 from the free throw line in the final 3:42.
Southwestern shot just 30.6% from the field and 17.6% from long range but took care of business on the defensive end, holding Schreiner to 20.7% from the floor and 9.1% from three point range.
Senior Staley Mullins led Southwestern with 18 points while Fareed added in 10. Senior Shae Seagraves was the leading rebounder with nine boards. Schreiner's Garrett led the Mountaineers with 18 points.
The Pirates remain at home for their final game before the holidays as they host Texas Lutheran University on Friday at noon.
