Tigers Unable To Hold Lead In One-Goal Loss To Centre

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Wittenberg took its first lead of the 2009 season, but the youthful Tigers were unable to hold it in a 2-1 loss to perennial powerhouse Centre in the final game of the Transylvania Invitational.

The loss was Wittenberg's third straight to open the new campaign, and it was the Tigers' second by a painful one goal margin. Wittenberg has two chances in the coming week to get back into the win column, starting with a road date at Thomas More on Tuesday, Sept. 8.

Wittenberg got on the board in the 17th minute as junior Spencer Hogue (Dublin, Ohio/Jerome) finished a play started by sophomore Stefan Latham (Springfield, Ohio/Catholic Central). The Tigers held a 1-0 lead through the middle of the second half, when Centre tied it in the 65th minute off a corner kick.

The Colonels finished things off in the 85th minute with a score on a penalty kick. Wittenberg sophomore goalkeeper Michael Lambeck (Dublin, Ohio/Coffman) wound up with three saves against two goals against.
