Mountaineers Use Four-Run Ninth to Squeak Past Crusaders
KERRVILLE, Texas - The University of Dallas baseball team fell to Schreiner University, 6-5, on Sunday afternoon. Dallas took a 5-2 lead into the bottom of the ninth, but Schreiner notched a four-run inning and came away with the walk-off victory.

Josh Abalos (Lewisville, Texas) got the Dallas offense started in the first inning with a single and a swipe of second base. Nathan Patton (McKinney, Texas) then drove him in with a single to centerfield to push across the first run of the game. Schreiner got a hit in their half of the first, but nothing came of it. After a fast second inning, Jordan Stickler (Grand Rapids, Mich.) grabbed a single in the third inning, but was later picked off.
The Mountaineers challenged in the third inning after Conner Coombs reached base on an error. He made his way to third but Andrew Magness (San Antonio, Texas) struck out the next batter to strand the runner. With two outs, Dallas got some magic going in the fourth. Zachary Taylor (Humble, Texas) notched a base hit with two runners in scoring position to plate two runs and advance to second on the throw. Joseph Griesbauer (Troy, Mo.) followed that up with a single to right field to help score Taylor and put the Crusaders up 4-0.
Schreiner answered in their half of the fourth by scoring a run after Chance Goins reached on an error, which helped Ben Benavides score. Patton walked and advanced to second in the fifth frame, but UD was unable to knock him in. The Mountaineers found some offense in the sixth once again after a Benavides walk, but Magness rolled up a double play to get out of danger. The next batter was hit by a pitch. Magness got the next batter to ground out to escape the inning with no damage.
Patton led off the eighth inning with his first triple of the season. Jessup Scott (Lewiston, Idaho) drove him in with a sacrifice fly to centerfield to put Dallas up 5-1. Schreiner pitching stranded one UD runner on base to get out of the frame. Quinones began the Schreiner half with a walk. The next two batter struck out, but then Austin Contreras reached base via an error and advanced to third, while Quinones came into score. Josh Gilliam followed that up with a walk. Magness, who continued to do well on the mound, got out of the jam after he got the next batter to ground into a fielder's choice.
Dallas took a 5-2 lead into the pivotal ninth inning. Maximilian Costello (Anchorage, Alaska) grabbed a single and made his way to second on a passed ball, but that is where he would eventually get stranded. The Mountaineers started their half off with a single and two walks. Dallas recorded one out with a foul out to the third baseman. The next batter walked to bring across one run. Sam Velazquez then reached on a fielder's choice to plate a run to make it 5-4. SU got a big hit from Contreras to right field that allowed two men to score for the walk-off win.
Patton led the Dallas offense with a 3-3 day at the plate, with one RBI, two runs scored, and a walk. Taylor had one hit and drove in two, while scoring a run. Griesbauer notched two hits and one RBI. Scott and Luke Boylson (Fairview, Texas) both had a sacrifice fly each. Abalos and Patton both swiped a base in the contest.
Magness went eight innings for UD, only allowing two hits, no earned runs, with seven strikeouts that was one shy of a season-high two weeks ago. Jaylen Camarillo (Georgetown, Texas) and William Bresnahan (Windham, N.H.) pitched in the final inning for the Crusaders.
Benavides led Schreiner with two hits, one run scored, and a walk. Contreras grabbed two RBI and one hit. Garrett Whitley pitched five innings, gave up six hits, and four runs. Jack Hakala went two innings on the mound, only allowing one hit. Castaneda and Gilliam also pitched one inning each.

Dallas will be back in Irving for its last home series of the season. The Crusaders will take on Southwestern University on Friday and Saturday (Apr. 19-20). Friday's doubleheader will get started at 12:00 p.m. On Saturday Senior Day will be held with first pitch slated for 1:00 p.m.
