Crusaders Edged by UMHB on Friday

IRVING, Texas - The University of Dallas men's soccer team fell to University of Mary Hardin-Baylor 2-0 on Friday night. The Cru (2-0-1) broke the scoreless tie late in the first half. In the 37th minute Jasen Zirkel beat the keeper after a nice strike to put UMHB up and eventually took this lead into halftime. UMHB, who is currently receiving votes in the United Soccer Coaches poll, extended its lead in the 69th minute as Josh Bruton was in the right place at the right time and was able to beat the keeper left. Caleb Strange (Argyle, Texas) kept Dallas (1-2-0) close making a career high 10 saves including a diving save on a penalty kick in the 79th minute.

Strange made several diving stops throughout the match to keep Dallas at arm's reach. UMHB outshot Dallas 9-4 in the first half, while UD put two of its attempts on goal. In the second half, Dallas and UMHB both took 13 shots. UD forced the UMHB goalie to make six saves. The Cru kept firing shots at the Dallas net, but Strange was able to grab eight saves in that half. Dallas had four shot attempts late, but the defense of UMHB blocked three of them to secure the win.

Nat Kajiwara (Southlake, Texas) led Dallas with five shot attempts. Chima Ogueri (Garland, Texas) followed right behind his teammate with four shots, placing two of them on frame. Tomas DePetris (Houston, Texas) added two shots on net. Strange played all 90 minutes in goal for UD. UMHB won the corner kicks battle 3-0.

Dallas will take two weeks off before hosting Schreiner University on September 20th. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m.
