Colorado College Blanks No. 8 Luther

Box Score

Head coach Scott Palguta challenged his team with a demanding schedule with the hopes of cracking the national rankings, and the Colorado College men's soccer team lived up to the challenge on Saturday night with a 3-0 victory over No. 8 Luther College at Washburn Field.

The victory was CC's first over a top-10 opponent since the 3-1 win over No. 1 Trinity on Sept. 20, 2015.

Keller Mochel kept the game scoreless in the 19th minute with a massive save, coming off his line to deny a shot by Luther's Marcos Vila labeled for the lower left corner.

A little more than two minutes later, the Tigers broke through on a sensational individual effort by John Schuler in the 21st minute. The junior midfielder settled an errant clearing attempt in the midfield, took a touch to the left, and then curled a left-footed shot into the upper right 90.

Colorado College struck for the second time midway through the 44th minute thanks to a pair of late substitutes. Senior midfielder Hayden Cogswell got on the end of a cross from junior midfielder Miles Montgomery from the right sideline and beat Luther goalkeeper Carson Davenport with a header back toward the right post.

Luther had a glorious chance to get on the board in the 54 minute, but Harry Merz launched a direct kick from the left edge of the 6-yard box over the crossbar.

Less than two minutes later, the Tigers struck for the third time when Griffin Meyer scored his first collegiate goal from the left side of the six with a sliding redirect off a cross from Jackson Silverstein.

Tiger Comments:
Head Coach Scott Palguta:
"It's a tremendous result for our group and it'll give us a lot of confidence moving forward. We beat a very good team today."
"That's a team with a championship mentality, I thought we dealt with it very well. The leadership that we had from John and Keller was outstanding and from front to back we were good, from our veteran players all the way down to our freshman, our freshmen players were fantastic, they gave us some really great minutes. As a staff we have to be really pleased."
"We're excited for next weekend. We're playing two more top-10 caliber teams."

Keller Mochel:
"We came out strong, we held them off"
"We had a freshman playing right back and that was his first start and he absolutely shut it down over there. That was huge to see. It was good to see the back line coming together more."
"This a great sign, were going to enjoy this one."

John Schuler:
"I saw the ball coming in across, kinda saw it going back post, so with front foot defending, I gotta step on it, so I chested it down and at that point just go for the goal."
"We talked early about putting it on frame and good things are going to happen."

Colorado College Statistical Leaders:
Mochel made five saves to record his 15th career shutout.
Schuler's game-winning goal was the second of his career.
Aidan Longhurst earned his first point since the 2017 campaign.

Luther Statistical Leaders:
The Norse finished with a 13-11 edge in total shots.
Faydane Ouro-Akondo launched a game-high four shots.
Davenport finished with two saves.

Notes:
The victory was CC's first over a ranked opponent since a 2-1 win at Luther College on Sept. 1, 2017.

Next for the Tigers:
Colorado College travels to central Ohio to face No. 10 Kenyon College on Friday, Sept. 6, and Ohio Wesleyan University on Saturday, Sept. 7.
