Women’s Soccer advances to Championship match on PKs

SEGUIN, Texas - After 110 scoreless minutes the Pirates earned their first ever spot in the SCAC Championship match by converting on all five penalty kicks against Texas Lutheran on Saturday.

Southwestern controlled the first half, rocketing off 15 shots while the Bulldogs got off just one, and continued it in the second half and took nine shots while holding TLU to seven.

Despite the domination, Southwestern was unable to score and the game went into overtime.

SU continued their dominance, taking two shots in the first extra frame and four in the second, but still the match remained scoreless.

With all the momentum on their side the Pirates took on the penalty kicks with confidence. TLU opened with a make by Sioned Kirkpatrick and Carol Bentley followed with a make of her own. The Bulldogs Tara Armstrong put away her shot as did Hayley Miesse. With the frame tied 2-2 Southwestern got the break the needed as Krystel Wolfe missed her attempt, opening the door for the Pirates. SU took care of business as Hannah Neil, Mariah Escajeda and Kirsten Mazur made it a perfect 5-for-5 to send SU into the finals.

Southwestern improves to 10-8-1 on the year as they take on Trinity in the Finals on Sunday at 1:00 pm.
