
CONWAY, Ark. - After a tough game Friday night the Southwestern women's soccer team came back strong to defeat Hendrix College 2-0 on Sunday afternoon. With the win the Pirates improve to 4-2-1 and the year and 1-1 in the SCAC.
The Pirates first struck near the mid-point of the first half. Senior Danielle Madison put home the rebound on a free kick from 35 yards out that glanced of the right post to put Southwestern up 1-0.
The tough Pirate defense held the Warriors in check for the remainder of the period and Southwestern retained a 1-0 lead heading into the break.
First-year Hailey Martin (pictured) scored her first collegiate goal in the 55th minute on a lofty shot from 50 yards out that bounced over the keeper's head for the unassisted goal. With a 2-0 lead and some breathing room Southwestern was able to play possession and hold Hendrix off for the win.
The Pirates were +9 in shot differential and +4 in corner kicks for the contest. Sophomore keeper Sarah Nonaka and six saves during the match and recorded her second shutout of the season.
Conference rival and nationally-ranked Trinity is next up for the Pirates as they return home on Saturday, October 2nd. Game time is set for 2:00 pm.
