Celts shut out Southwestern for sixth consecutive win

HOUSTON – The Celts of the University of St. Thomas ran their winning streak to six matches Friday night with a 2-0 win over Southwestern (Texas).

At AVEVA Stadium, the Celts used a pair of second-half goals to put away the visiting Pirates and put an exclamation point on the team's Senior Night festivities.

UST's Maxwell Lockhart (JR/Toronto, Canada) broke the scoreless tie shortly after the hour mark when he put in a rebound off the foot of Carlos Marquez (SR/El Paso, Texas) in the 63rd minute. In the 74th minute, it was Marquez who was in the right place in the goal box to head in a perfect pass from Luis Bencomo (JR/Barquisimeto, Venezuela).

With the win, the Celts (10-5, 6-1 SCAC) are still in the hunt for a share of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference's regular-season championship. The Celts are scheduled to play Texas Lutheran on Sunday, and still need to make an earlier contest at Austin College that was rained out.

The Celts were in total control of the match as they outshot the visiting Pirates 18-4. UST goalkeeper Pedro Medrano (SO/San Salvador, El Salvador) needed to make two saves to record his fifth shutout of the season. Friday's shutout was the seventh for the Celts this season, and fourth in the last five matches.

UST concludes the home portion of its schedule Sunday when the Celts host Texas Lutheran. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:30 p.m., approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of the women's contest between the two schools.
