Bulldogs defeat Yellow Jackets 2-1 in Extra Time

SEGUIN, Texas -- After weather canceled their home opener Monday vs. Concordia (TX), Texas Lutheran Women's Soccer had their first action on Gustafson Field as they took the pitch versus the Yellow Jackets of Howard Payne University. With that first match, came their first victory as the Bulldogs beat a previously undefeated Howard Payne club 2-1 in double overtime.

The Bulldogs were heavily out shot by the Yellow Jackets as the match concluded with the Yellow Jackets finishing with a 17-7 advantage but that didn't matter as the Bulldogs made the most of their opportunities. The Bulldogs played to a 0-0 half in the first half as freshman Charleigh Phipps (Dripping Springs/Dripping Springs) was able to keep a clean sheet with 3 saves in the first half.

The offenses of both clubs showed minimal signs of life in the second half. Samantha Martinez (Schertz/Clemens) scored on the Bulldogs lone shot on goal in the second half in the 57th minute [assisted by Monique Sierra (San Antonio/Taft)]. The Bulldogs maintained a 1-0 lead for a majority of the second half until a Howard Payne equalizer in the 77th minute.

The Bulldogs would have three more shots after that Martinez second half goal - one of those being the unassisted game winner from freshman Allison Avery (Houston/Cy Falls) - her first career goal in the 106th minute.

The Bulldogs are back in action Sunday as they go on the road to play the University of Dallas. Game time is set for 2 PM. Live stats and video can be found on tlubulldogs.com.
