COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – McMurry University swimming had its final tune-up prior to the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference championships this past weekend, competing at the Colorado College Classic. The two-day event took place at CC's Schlessman Natatorium on Saturday and Sunday, January 21-22.
The War Hawks women's team was eighth and the men fifth in the final meet standings.
Robyn Remschel was McM's lone event winner versus a field which consisted mostly of NCAA II competition (McM and host Colorado College were the only NCAA III teams). Remschel took first place in the women's 200-yard backstroke (2:10.16), after also posting the fastest time in the preliminaries.
Remschel was also fourth in the 100-yard backstroke (1:01.35).
Sophomore teammate
Monica Flores posted a personal-best time in the 100 backstroke, swimming a 1:19.63.
Zandria Rodriguez was close behind in that same event with a 1:20.32 finish. The duo reversed places in the 200 breaststroke, with Rodriguez finishing at 2:54.12 and Flores right behind her at 2:54.14.
On the men's side, sophomore
Jerick Pena had a solid meet for McM, including a season-best time of 55.61 seconds in the 100-yard backstroke. Pena was fourth overall in that event. Pena was also fifth in the 200 individual medley (2:03.54) and sixth in the 100 butterfly (54.87).
McMurry's men's 400 freestyle relay quartet – consisting of
Tyler Gentry,
Zach Tassin,
Dany Baki and Matthew Vess – posted a season-best effort of 3:51.21 minutes. Gentry was also 13th in the 100-yard breaststroke.
