Goldsmith helps Tigers extend winning streak

Junior Laura Goldsmith pounded down 21 kills Saturday as she helped the 13th-ranked Colorado College volleyball team extend its winning streak with victories over Hendrix College and Rhodes College during the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Central Intra-Pod tournament in Conway, Ark.

The Tigers now have now won 13 consecutive matches, their longest streak during Rick Swan's tenure as head coach. The previous longest, 12, occurred from Oct. 16 through Nov. 7, 2009.

CC defeated host Hendrix, 3-0 (25-12, 25-11, 25-19), to begin the first day of the crossover at Grove Gymnasium, holding the Warriors to a .023 hitting percentage and allowing only three players to hit above a .000 attack percentage.

Goldsmith led the Tigers with a career-high .714 hitting percentage and 11 kills. She also served up tthree service aces while adding seven digs on defense.

Senior Amy Schornack ran the offense with 24 assists and recorded a .545 attack percentage with six kills. Senior Sarah Schmoker added nine kills, while Haley Hamilton contributed with seven. Freshman Randi Braak also served three aces to tie with Goldsmith for the team lead.

Senior Hannah Varnell paced the back row with 11 digs. Hamilton and Schornack finished with two blocks apiece.

Colorado College concluded the afternoon with a 3-1 (20-25, 27-25, 25-14, 25-17) triumph over Rhodes.

The Tigers dropped the first set after hitting just .097 percent. The set saw 12 tied scores and five lead changes.

CC improved with a .300 attack percentage in the second set to pull even in the match.The Tigers led most of the way, but the Lynx rallied to tie at 24-24. Colorado College took the lead with a kill by Schornack, but Rhodes once again knotted the score with a kill by Michelle Quina. CC regained the lead off of a service error by the Lynx and went on to win the set with a kill by Goldsmith.

The Tigers carried the momentum into the third and fourth sets, hitting .370 percen in the finale to close out the match.

Freshman Kirsten Liberty and Goldsmith led CC offensively with a team-high 10 kills each. Schornack collected 31 assists and served up three aces.

Goldsmith had 14 digs along with her 10 kills to earn her 11th double-double of the season. Schornack also posted her 12th double-double of the season with a team-high 15 digs along with her 31 assists.

Varnell added 12 digs, while the freshman duo of Julia Lawton and Liberty were credited with 10 apiece to aid the back row for the Tigers. Sophomore Devin Wilkinson and Schornack each combined for four blocks to spark the team at the net.

CC improved to 27-5 for the season and 12-1 in conference play. Hendrix fell to 14-15 overall and 5-7 in SCAC action, while Rhodes dropped to 10-19 toverall and 3-10 in league action.

The Tigers wrap up conference play with a rematch against Millsaps College at 11 a.m. Sunday. CC will be back home on Nov. 1 for its final regular-season encounter and "Senior Night" against Colorado State University-Pueblo.
