SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- In their first game of 2010 as the top-ranked team in the nation, the CNU men's soccer team (9-0-0) escaped with a one-goal victory over the Southwestern University Pirates, 2-1. The Captains used a pair of goals in the second half to erase a halftime deficit, with scores from team leaders Brian Lybert (Honolulu, Hawaii) and Winston Mattheisen (Norfolk, Va.).

The neutral site contest was held in San Antonio, Texas on the campus of Trinity University. The Captains will face the 6th ranked Tigers tomorrow night.

Southwestern jumped out to an early lead, scoring in the first five minutes of the game. Forrest Baker got a pass to Evan Perkins, who beat CNU goalkeeper, Justin Wolfe (Williamsburg, Va.) for the score. It was just the fourth goal allowed this season by the Captains.

CNU outshot Southwestern 11-5 in the first half, and posted nine corner kicks as they pressed offensively. It was the first time this season the Captains were forced to play from behind.

The equalizer would come, though, right at the beginning of the second half. CNU was awarded a penalty kick just 1:30 into the second frame, and Lybert stepped up to take it. With the goal, he recorded his team-leading fifth goal of the season.

Then, in the 69th minute, Lybert would assist on the gamewinner to classmate Winston Mattheisen. Mattheisen beat Daniel Poole to post his second game-winning goal of the season and giving Lybert his eighth assist on the season. Before the game, Lybert ranked fourth in the nation in assists per game.

For the game, the Captains outshot the Pirates, 17-10, including six shots on-goal. CNU had 11 corner kicks to Southwestern's four. Wolfe played the full ninety for CNU, making a pair of saves while allowing one goal.

Southwestern was led by Evan Perkins, with three shots and a goal scored. The Pirates split the goalkeeping duties between Nick Pierece and Daniel Poole, each with one save while Poole allowed a pair of goals. Also a pair of Southwestern defenders made team saves in the match.

Lybert led the way for CNU, taking four shots with two on-frame. He had three points, while Mattheison added three shots, two on-goal.
