HOUSTON,TX- Celts baseball team split their doubleheader with McMurry University on Saturday at Reckling Park, dropping the first game 13-2 before bouncing back with a thrilling 13-11 victory in the series finale. The results move the Celts to 10-9 overall and 8-6 in SCAC conference play.
Game 1: UST 2, McMurry 13
The Celts struggled to find their rhythm in the first game of the doubleheader, falling behind early and never recovering. McMurry scored six runs in the third inning to take a commanding lead, and the Celts were unable to mount a comeback.
St. Thomas got on the board in the top of the fourth inning when Gabe Garner singled to shortstop, driving in Dillon McKee. Later in the inning, Eduardo Tamez hit a sacrifice fly to score Garner, cutting the deficit to 6-2. However, McMurry continued to add runs, eventually securing the 13-2 victory.
Game 2: UST 13, McMurry 11
The Celts bounced back in a big way in the second game, overcoming an early 6-0 deficit to secure a hard-fought win. McMurry jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first two innings, but St. Thomas began chipping away in the third.
Anthony Benavidez grounded out to third base, driving in Eduardo Tamez to make it 6-1. Alex Trinh then reached on an error, allowing Tyler Mills to score, and Dylan Lamb doubled to right field, driving in Dillon McKee to cut the deficit to 6-3.
The Celts continued to rally in the fourth inning when Eduardo Tamez launched a solo home run, making it 6-4. St. Thomas exploded for six runs in the sixth inning, highlighted by a two-run single from Sam Lampson and a three-run home run by Dillon McKee, giving the Celts a 13-6 lead.
McMurry fought back with five runs in the late innings, but the Celts held on to secure the 13-11 victory.
