Borko Strikes in Overtime to Burn Berry

Tyler Borko scored a lot of memorable goals during his career at Colorado College, but his final goal against Berry College on Saturday afternoon is one he'll never forget.

Borko, an Atlanta native, struck 52 seconds into overtime to give the Tigers a 10-9 victory over the Vikings from Mount Berry, Ga.

The senior midfielder nearly ended the game 11 seconds earlier when he whistled a shot inches outside the far post from the left wing.

After nearly breaking his stick out of frustration, Borko was not about to let another chance slip away. He worked himself free from Berry's Cole Johnson on the right side and put a laser past goaltender Riley Brogdon low on the far side.

"After the last weekend, it feels good to come back and put one in the net at the end," Borko said. "I think there are a lot of things we can improve. We definitely stepped it up a bit from the last game, but (we) still can improve. I have a couple of friends on that team, so it was nice to beat a team from back home. It feels good to get the win."

Borko finished with three goals and an assist for Colorado College, which improved to 1-2.

Junior attacker Coby Petau registered two goals and an assist, while sophomore attacker Boe Gold struck for a pair of goals.

The game would not have made it to overtime had it not been for the stellar play of CC's man-down unit.

The Tigers successfully killed seven of Berry's eight extra-man opportunities, including one during the final minute of regulation.

"I gave the man-down unit the game ball," head coach Sean Woods said. "Led by seniors Carter Richardson, Jack Ammons and Parker Woo, that unit has been great in all three of our games. They work really well together and bailed us out today."

With the Vikings holding for the final shot, freshman midfielder Charlie Gans stripped the ball from Chris Berchock with 15 seconds to go, which allowed the Tigers to run out the clock.

Berchock, who finished with four goals, tied the game at 9-9 with 57 seconds left.

Hudson Harris finished with four goals and an assist for Berry.

Berry finished with a 46-39 advantage in total shots, while CC had a 23-22 edge in ground balls.

After missing the first two games of the season, junior goaltender Andrew Harwood stopped 14 shots, including four in the fourth quarter.

"Coming back I felt good," Harwood said. "(I was) definitely anxious at first, but once I got back into the net it just felt right.

"We have a lot of work to do. We played a little sloppy in general, but they did too, so it worked out in the end. We'll look a lot better next week. I think coach will be in our ears about practice this week and I think we'll come out firing next weekend."

Brogdon made 14 saves for the Vikings, who dropped to 0-3.

Colorado College plays host to Widener University on Sunday, March 3.
