Austin College Steals Sweep from Pirates

Southwestern logged just one fewer hit than the 'Roos on Sunday afternoon but were unable to bring a run around as the Pirates fell 4-0 to Austin College in SCAC action. The loss drops SU to 15-13 on the year and 6-7 in the SCAC.

At the outset of day two Austin College knew they had to score early and did so in the top of the first. A leadoff single by Merritt down the right field line followed by a stolen base moved him into scoring position. A slow roller to short advanced him to third and then Appelquist brought him in with a grounder to second base allowing AC to take an early 1-0 lead.

The 'Roos threatened to extend their lead in the fourth, getting runners on first and second with just one out. Starting pitcher Alan Lowry took matters into his own hands, however, and turned an inning ending double play after knocking down a line drive shot right back at him, keeping the count 1-0 through four.

A bloop single to left in the sixth gave Austin College another run and after adding runs in the seventh and ninth, pushed their lead to 4-0. Despite recording almost as many hits as the 'Roos, Southwestern's poor offensive execution kept them from scoring.

Both pitchers went the distance on the mound. AC's Curtis earned the win allowing no runs on eight hits with one walk and striking out five. Southwestern's Alan Lowry garnered the loss, allowing four runs, three earned, on nine hits while walking one and striking out four.

Brett Martin (pictured) was the bright spot at the plate for the Pirates, going 3-4 on the afternoon. AC's Merritt led for the 'Roos with a 3-4 game with two runs scored.

The loss drops the Pirates further behind Hendrix in the chase for the third playoff spot, especially after the Warriors took two games from Trinity this weekend. SU remains in conference action as they face conference-rival Trinity in San Antonio for a three game series beginning on Friday at 1pm.
