Men’s Basketball Drops Three in San Antonio

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Southwestern's offense was strong in the three contests at the Trinity Invitational this week, but SU was out-rebounded in all three contests as they fell to 1-12 on the year.

SU opened the invitational with an undefeated Puget Sound squad on Tuesday afternoon and rose to the challenge, shooting 50% from the field and 61.5% from three point range and had five players in double figures, but were outrebounded 39-17 and was the difference maker as they fell 91-77.

Michael Cantu led with 16 points while Logan Hurley added in 13 and Daniel Mataya (pictured) chipped in 12.

Wednesday night the Pirates took on Pacific College out of Oregon and were outscored in both halves as they fell 76-55. Southwestern wasn't quite as hot as the previous night, but shot a respectable 37.5% from the floor and 44.4% from three point range. They were out-rebounded once again, 41-22, in the contest.

Nick Atiee led the way for the Pirates with 16 points off the bench on 5-7 from three point range while Adrian Johnson was the only other Pirate in double digits with 10 points.

Southwestern closed out the invitational with another strong team, taking on Whitworth on Thursday. SU struggled from three point range, shooting just 17.6% from long range while Whitworth hit a hot streak, shooting 45.2% from the arc. Logan Hurley led the charge with 16 points.

The Pirates have a much needed break before returning to action after the new year, returning to SCAC action on January 13th at home facing Birmingham Southern.
