CC hangs on to clip Stormy Petrels

Box Score Colorado College built a 20-point lead seven minutes into the second half, but had to survive a nerve-racking final two minutes to hang on for a 61-58 victory over Oglethorpe University on Sunday at Reid Gymnasium.

The Stormy Petrels were within a point after Alec Pitts sank three free throws with 45 seconds to go, but on OU's next possession he missed a jumper from the top of the lane with less than five seconds remaining and sophomore guard Chris Mayo-Smith sealed the victory for the Tigers from the free-throw line.

Senior forward Jeremiah Waters buried back-to-back 3-pointers to give the Tigers a 45-25 advantage with 12:59 to play, and CC held a 19-point lead four minutes later following a pair of free throws by freshman forward Chris Lesnansky.

That, however, was when the momentum took a dramatic shift.

The Stormy Petrels exploited the absence of sophomore point guard Ryan Milne, the SCAC's second-leading scorer and top assist man, who missed a second straight game due to an injury.

Oglethorpe scored seven consecutive points to cut its deficit to 50-38 with 7:46 still to play, and after a layup by the Tigers sophomore guard Jake Tramutolo, the Stormy Petrels ran off eight more points to pull to within 52-48 on a three-pointer by Tyler Courson with 3:46 remaining.

Colorado College committed six turnovers, went 1-for-seven from the floor and just 4-for 9 from the charity stripe during the final nine minutes.

Waters led CC with a game-high 18 points, knocking down six of 15 attempts from behind the arc. He finished the game with 150 career 3-pointers and became the eighth player in program history to reach that milestone.

Junior forward Ian Rewoldt tied his season high with 17 points, while Tramutolo added 13 points and four assists. Lesnansky grabbed a game-high eight rebounds and chipped in seven points.

Andrew Steioff paced OU with 17 points, while Jordan Kinney and Pitts added 14 apiece.

The Tigers squared their season record at 9-9 and remain just a game out of first place in the SCAC's West Division with a 6-5 ledger. The Stormy Petrels slipped to 9-11 overall and 4-7 in conference play.

Colorado College continues its four-game home stand next weekend when Austin College and the University of Dallas visit Reid Gymnasium on Friday and Sunday, respectively.
