Woods Notches CC Victory No. 100 as Tigers Pull Away from CSU Pueblo

Head coach Sean Woods recorded victory No. 100 at Colorado College as the Tigers pulled away from CSU Pueblo in the second half for an 18-8 victory on Monday night.

Woods, now in his 10th season at CC, owns a 100-38 record and joins Steve Beville (1989-98) atop the program's coaching chart in terms of victories as well as longevity.

"I don't know what to say about the milestone other than I love coaching for Colorado College," Woods said. "Our department, our alumni, our parents. It's just special here.

"For the past nine-plus years I've gone to work every day with great appreciation that I get to coach the greatest group of young men out there. It's an honor and a privilege to be a part of their lives and my 100 wins here is simply just a milestone. I take much more pride in the relationships and the role I've played in all the Tigers I've coached. This truly is a special lacrosse family that we have here at CC."

For the first 15 minutes, the Thunderwolves stayed with the Tigers. In fact, they took a 2-1 lead when Skyler Weathers scored the first of his three goals with 2:14 remaining in the first quarter.

Colorado College was on the verge of breaking the game open when it scored four in a row to take a 5-2 lead on Elliot Nelson's goal second goal a little more than three minutes into the second quarter. However, CSUP scored three of the next to pull to within a goal with 2:22 before halftime.

Jacob Smith gave the Tigers a shot of momentum when he scored with 40 seconds to go in the second quarter, and a motivational speech from Woods did the rest.

"I told the team at halftime that all we've done all year is respond to challenges and that's what we are going to do again," Woods said. "I challenged them to be the best version of themselves individually and collectively and just play Tiger Lacrosse. And that's exactly what we did."

Coming out of the break, CC rose to the challenge.

Junior attackman Anders Erickson scored 13 seconds into the quarter and goals by Makay Hansen and Winston Chodnicki gave Colorado College a 10-5 lead.

After Weather got one back for CSU Pueblo, the Tigers went on a 5-0 binge to extend their cushion to 15-6 just 1:24 into the fourth quarter and put the game out of reach.

"In the first half, we came out flat. Plain a simple, and our opponent was playing really hard and really well. I'm proud of the way we responded, but I told them if we wait until halftime to respond when we head out east, we lose in a big way."

Erickson recorded four goals and three assists, and led the Tigers with seven points. Hansen finished with four goals, while Nelson added two goals and three assists.

Freshman goaltender Ben Anastos made a season-high 18 saves in a little more than 55 minutes.

Chodnicki won 15 of 20 faceoffs and led the Tigers with 12 ground balls.

Colorado College posted a 67-36 advantage in total shots and won the battle for ground balls, 44-34.
