#5 Colorado College Uses Late-Set Rally to Defeat Bulldogs
HOUSTON, TX -- The 5th-ranked Colorado College Tigers used a late fourth-set rally to surge past the Texas Lutheran Bulldogs to win the match in four sets 3-1 (17-25, 25-23, 10-25, 23-25) Saturday afternoon on the campus of St. Thomas University in Houston.
Texas Lutheran lost the first and third sets rather decisively but the Bulldogs were able to steal the second set from the Tigers. The Bulldogs put the Tigers on their heels in a tightly contested fourth set but the Tigers were able to stave off the Bulldogs comeback and close the match 25-23.
Texas Lutheran's Maddy Schultz (Richmond/Needville) had 11 kills to lead all Bulldogs. The Richmond, Texas, native hit .200 with 11 kills on 35 swings. Tanyse Moehrig-Woodard (Spring Branch/Smithson Valley) was the only other Bulldog to finish in double-digits - finishing with 10 kills. As a team, Texas Lutheran hit .165 for the match and was on the verge of pushing one of the top teams in the country to five sets.
Shavonne Respondek (San Antonio/Madison) had 20 assists for the Bulldogs to go along with 14 digs. Lexi Morris (Victoria/Victoria West) (20) and Celie Contreras (San Marcos/San Marcos) (12) joined Respondek in logging double-digit digs. Keriann Kallus (New Braunfels/New Braunfels) led the Bulldogs with 3 blocks with Peyton Sulak (Needville/Needville) and Maddy Schultz adding two each.
TLU falls to 8-7 (1-3 SCAC) while Colorado College improves to 15-2 (4-1 SCAC) on the season.
