Box Score Colorado College celebrated Senior Day on Sunday afternoon at Stewart Field, and it was a memorable occasion thanks in large part to the efforts of its junior class.
At least one of CC's juniors factored in every goal as the 19th-ranked Tigers closed out the home portion of its Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference schedule with a 4-0 victory over Schreiner University.
With the win, Colorado College improved to 9-3-1 overall and 7-2-0 in league play.
After a series of near misses early in the first half, junior forward
Sam Markin struck for the only goal CC needed in the 25th minute.
Junior midfielder
Tim Huettel touched a through ball from sophomore midfielder
Robert Malone back to Markin, who whistled a shot into the right side of the net from 15 yards out in the center of the box.
Despite a 20-2 margin in total shots during the first half, the Tigers had to protect a one-goal lead until the 58th minute. That's when junior midfielder
Joel Frykholm raced 50 yards down the middle of the pitch and slipped the ball under Mountaineer goalkeeper Brandon Anselmi from the center of the penalty area.
Frykholm made it 3-0 with a little less than 11 minutes to play when he took a back pass from junior midfielder
Austin Hammer and found the net with a blast from the middle of the box.
Sophomore forward
Daniel Krueger closed out the scoring in the 87th minute when he took a touch from Huettel in the center of the box, moved the ball around Anselmi who had come off his line to challenge, and calmly slid the ball into an open net.
"I thought it was a very professional effort from our guys this afternoon," head coach
Scott Palguta said. "The team approached the game with the right mentality and the four goals were a nice reward for their strong play.
"There were many excellent performances, but I thought the Frykholm brothers were our standout players this weekend."
At the other end of the field, the Colorado College defense did not permit a shot on goal while recording its eighth clean sheet of the season.
CC junior goalkeeper
Theo Hooker broke the school record with his 23rd career shutout and seventh of the season.
The last time Hooker posted a clean sheet without making a save was the 4-0 victory over Centenary College on Sept. 12, 2014, in the fourth start of his career.
The Tigers outshot Schreiner, 30-3, and produced all eight of the game's corner kicks.
"We were pleased to see our seniors finish their home conference careers with a big win," Palguta said. "They have given a lot to our program the last four years and deserved a dominant win on Stewart Field today."
Anselmi kept the Mountaineers within striking distance by making seven saves, several of which denied shots from point-blank range.
Schreiner slipped to 2-11-2 overall and 1-7-1 in the SCAC.
Colorado College plays host to Johnson & Wales University on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. in the final home game of the 2016 regular season.
