Women's Soccer Advances to SCAC Championship Match After Buzzer Beater Goal in Overtime

GEORGETOWN, TEXAS - In an exciting match against the Centenary College Ladies, Southwestern University's Maya Fuller scored a last-second header in overtime to send the Pirates into the conference championship match.

The game was highly physical, and the players close in talent. Both Centenary and Southwestern swiftly made their way down both ends of the field, trying to score on each other. However, both the Pirates and Ladies offense could not make it past the other side's defensive squad. Centenary took four shots in the first half and their goalie Karlie Delhommer racked up two saves, while Southwestern took eight shots before halftime.

In the second half, both teams started to feel the pressure of securing their spot in the championship game, which set the stage for some physical and aggressive play. The Pirates unfortunately gained a red card with 27 minutes still left in the game which meant the team played one man down the rest of the time. However, the Southwestern defensive line made up of Romie Reyna, Karlee Holmes, Sam Davis and goalie Mary Cardone held Centenary off to go into overtime.

Once again Centenary and Southwestern faced off to try and score the winning goal.  Both Whitney Whitehill and Maya Fuller tried to score for the Pirates off of a few fast breaks, but nothing hit the net. With the clock winding down, Centenary received a red card with less than a minute left in the game. That lead to the Pirates having the last possession in overtime. With time running out and only 10 seconds left on the clock, Ariel Mansholt took a corner kick, placing the ball right above Fuller, who back headed the ball into the net past opposing defenders and Centenary's goalie right as the game buzzer went off. The crowd burst into cheers and applause and the Pirates team swarmed around Fuller on the field, celebrating the hard-earned triumph. Southwestern now moves to the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference championship game.

Southwestern will take on Trinity University on Sunday, Nov. 10  at 1 p.m. on Varsity Field in Georgetown, Texas.
